Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - Done Mixing

We're done mixing Leap, and it actually went much more quickly than usual! What are the chances of that? John Griffin got a really sweet sound, and our tweaking is at an end. Now we just master it and get it into your hands!

Monday, July 26, 2004 - Thanks to our friends

We'd like to say a big thank you to everybody who came out to Clark's yesterday to check out our show. The room was packed, and we played a high energy 40 minute set. It was great to get on stage again, and we're gearing up for a busy August. We'll let you know later this week about the awards results. Thanks!

Also, a couple people who couldn't make last night it have asked what the "Big Announcement" we were referring to in our email was. Well, here it is:

We are happy to announce that Patrick Flanagan has now joined Drop Trio as our full time bass player. Nino, as many of you know, had a new baby in April and has decided that his priorities are with his family right now, so it was time to step down. He'll still be back from time to time for a gig here or there, but Patrick is now the full fledged Drop Trio bassist.  Please welcome Patrick to the family!

Sunday, July 25, 2004 - At Clarks Tonight

Come down to 314 Main tonight to hear Drop Trio play at Clarks. It's our showcase for the Houston Press Music Awards. For $7, you can see 65 local bands - not a bad deal! We play at 6pm. See you there!

Saturday, July 24, 2004 - Multiple Trick Pony

We just returned from Austin, where we were in the studio doing some recording. Not of Drop Trio material, though ... believe it or not, we went in to the studio with Amberjack Rice, a roots singer-songwriter from Austin. After meeting us at SxSW this year, he decided that we had the sound he wanted for his next record. One day trip to Austin later, he's got 8 tracks of material with a full band. We'll let you hear a sample of it when it's released this fall.

Next up: swedish death metal.

Friday, July 23, 2004 - Infradig Tonight

Tonight, we've invited the band Infradig to come play at Brasil for Funk Jazz Fridays. Infradig hails from Chattanooga, TN, and they play "electro-funk-groove-hop" (which means, basically, that if you dig Drop Trio you will most certainly dig their stuff). Come catch their only tour stop in Houston!

Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - Mixing

We spent tonight at Sugarhill studios working on mixes of our new project, Leap, with John Griffin. The mixes sound great! We hadn't anticipated the particular challenges of mixing an album that consists of one big 60-minute block of sound, not to mention the addition of acoustic piano, various strange percussion instruments,  distorted bass tracks, etc. ... but John is rolling with the punches and getting a really sweet mix. We'll let you hear a clip as soon as it's ready.

Monday, July 19, 2004 - Leap Tracks

We've settled on the final track listing for Leap, our forthcoming studio record. In case you're curious, here are the song titles:

1. Leap
2. The Big S. O.
3. That There
4. Because Rifles Are Huge
5. Cowuuube
6. Washington's Armies
7. Severed
8. Ooog Baby
9. The Elements Of Argument
10. Two Words: Sound
11. Robot Suit: I
12. Robot Suit: II
13. Robot Suit: III
14. Leapt

Most of the songs don't have a discrete start and stop - basically, tracks 1-9 and 11-14 are continuous blocks of music, with a brief pause (an interlude, as it were) for track 10, "Two Words: Sound". Which is actually just Nuje, playing Rhodes through a bunch of strange effects. Don't say we didn't warn you - this record is going to be a bit different from the last one.

Thursday, July 15, 2004 - Vote!

A few folks have told us of trouble with the online voting for the Houston Press awards. It appears that the Houston Press has updated their web site to make it a little bit easier to vote. If you weren't able to do it before, please try once more:

http://www.houstonpress.com/musicshowcase/2004/

Click on "Vote Now!" to vote for us. If that doesn't work, try a different web browser (Netscape, Mozilla, etc.) or try going to houstonpress.com and clicking the "Music Awards Showcase" banner at the top. Vote for us under:

Best Jazz (Drop Trio)
Best Funk / Soul / R&B (Drop Trio)
Best Keyboardist (Ian Varley, Drop Trio)
Album Of The Year (Big Dipper, Drop Trio)

Not sure who else to vote for? Here's a list of our picks - talented friends of ours who deserve your vote as well. Thanks!

Tuesday, July 13, 2004 - Stucco Fish @ Funk Jazz Fridays

Our "TBA" slot for Funk Jazz Fridays this week is finally "A"! Our last minute saviours are none other than Stucco Fish, the jazz + jazz = funk group from right here in Houston, TX. These guys are masters of their instruments and have an incredibly tasty set of songs at the ready. Come on down to Brasil for your weekly dose.

Monday, July 12, 2004 - Leaping Lizards

We've been hard at work on our second full-length record, Leap. Tonight Nuje and Ian spent 4 hours hunched over a computer screen editing, excising, adjusting and mostly saying things like "Uh, will anybody like this?". We like it, but it's pretty different from Big Dipper, that much is certain. We hope everybody will come to it with open ears. You can hear for yourself in a little over a month!

Sunday, July 11, 2004 - New Dates

We've started adding to our show calendar for August and September with some regional shows. We've got a new date in Bryan, TX at Revolution - August 13th, during graduation weekend. We also just booked a short tour eastward - our return to Beaumont on Sept. 3 (a spot called The Vortex) and our first time in Lake Charles, LA on Sept. 4th (the venue is called Breezy's). Thanks to John Fulbright for the former, and Jody Taylor for the latter. Also, we've got a 3 band, 3 city tour (Denton / Houston / Austin) in the works for September as well. Stay tuned for that one.

Saturday, July 10, 2004 - Spinning Gold

DJAlchemy brought some serious downtemp acid jazz grooves to Brasil last night. It was great to soak it all in, over a beer and a pizza - nice to be "audience" for a change. Also in attendance were mutual friends The Last Soul Descendents, who actually released a couple tracks on DJAlchemy's label, WE Records. Small world! We'll make sure to get Jason back this way to spin again soon.

Friday, July 09, 2004 - Tonight - DJAlchemy @ Funk Jazz Fridays

Tonight at Funk Jazz Fridays, come by and check out the sounds of DJAlchemy - downtempo acid jazz tracks, with remixes of Blue Note, Cirque De Soleil, Astor Piazzola, and more. Cool music for a hot summer night (a little beer doesn't hurt either). See you there!

Monday, July 05, 2004 - Vote for Drop Trio

It is time once again for the Houston Press Music Awards. Drop Trio has four nominations this year including album of the year, which we think is pretty cool for a goofy funk/jazz band. Thanks to all of you who voted to get us those nominations - now we need your vote one more time, for the actual awards. Click here and vote in the following categories:

Best Jazz (Drop Trio)
Best Funk / Soul / R&B (Drop Trio)
Best Keyboardist (Ian Varley, Drop Trio)
Album Of The Year (Big Dipper, Drop Trio)

Vote Now! Thanks!

Sunday, July 04, 2004 - Happy 4th!

Happy fourth of July!

Saturday, July 03, 2004 - LoCascio Trio Tonight

Thanks to everybody who came out to see Ellipsis last night, it was a great show. Those guys always knows how to pump up a crowd, and that they did. (Plus, last night they were joined by Clay from Secret Agent 8 on saxophone, which was a pretty cool addition.)

Tonight, the Joe LoCascio trio takes the stage at Cezanne. This will be an incredible show, so make your plans to be there!

Friday, July 02, 2004 - Ellipsis Tonight

In a last minute change of plans, we will have Ellipsis tonight at Brasil for Funk Jazz Fridays. The Fabulous Tidbits (from Dallas) had a last minute complication and couldn't make it, so our good friends Nick & company stepped into the void for us. Come bask in the glory of some of Houston's finest instrumentalists. We'll see you there!

Thursday, July 01, 2004 - 4 Nominations

Drop Trio has been nominated for 4 awards in this year's Houston Press Music Awards! We're up for Best Jazz, Best Funk / Soul / R&B, Best Keyboards, and Album Of The Year (Big Dipper). Big thanks to everybody who nominated us to get us on the ballot. We'll let you know as soon as online voting is available!
