Tomorrow night we're heading back to Austin for a show with our pals
Gnappy and
Apostrophe, two of Austin's finest funk jazz crossover outfits. We'll be at the
Flamingo Cantina, going on early (9pm). So spread the word!
In another installment of "Why Drop Trio is Houston's nerdiest band", we've now added an
RSS feed to the Drop Trio blog. What's an RSS feed? It's basically a version of your blog that other programs can read directly and format however they want. What kind of a program would do that? Well, a news aggregator like
NewsGator for one.
So now not only can you get our showdates on your
mobile phone, you can now get them in your newsreader, too.
OK, if you'll excuse me, I need to go put some tape on my glasses ...
If you're looking to put some fire in your step tonight, head up to
Onion Creek. You can find a pretty hot jazz trio consisting of
Thomas Helton,
Jose-Miguel Yamal,
Richard Cholakian, burning it up for your enjoyment. This trio will defy all laws of physics, statistics, harmony and public decency. No cover, 9pm, 3106 White Oak (just down the street from Fitzgerald's).
OK, here's one from the "we're great big nerds" department.
Any of you with mobile phones that have web access can now access a fully XHTML-basic compliant, streamlined version of our site ON YOUR PHONE, to get showdates and other goodies while you're on the go. You can even download custom Drop Trio themed phone graphics. Go to http://www.droptrio.com/mobile. (You can go from a regular computer if you want, but it doesn't look like much.)
You may be asking: don't we have anything better to do with our time? Probably, yes. But, well, sometimes you just have to let the inner nerd out for a little while. This addition was all Nino's doing, so if you use it, send him a note and let him know (nino @ droptrio . com).
Please keep our friend Anthony Frazier (from High Volume Music) in your thoughts and prayers today - his father passed away this morning at 8am. It has been a long and difficult journey for Anthony and his family, and our hearts are with him today.
Tonight, Drop Trio will be playing at Brasil for
Funk Jazz Fridays. Nino and Ian are both a bit under the weather (read: sick as dogs) so we'll all be heavily medicated tonight. That probably means some
far out funk jazz.
Drop Trio
Friday, 3/26/04
Brasil - 2604 Dunlavy @ Westheimer
10 pm - ALL AGES - FREE
Come on out, it should be a blast.
(Also, if you're on any local music lists, please accept our apologies for sending out a notice for Funk Jazz Fridays twice yesterday. Did I mention we're heavily medicated?)
Big Dipper is in heavy rotation on the
Kweevak.com radio station. Tonight they've got an all-request hour, at 7pm EST (6pm central).
Tune in and request Drop Trio songs by calling 866.369.6788!
Just added a new show to our roster - Saturday May 8th will be our first ever show in
Beaumont, TX (home to the wife of a certain keyboard player, who shall remain nameless). It's at a place called
The Art Studio, and it's looking like it'll be a big show, lots of fun. If you're in Beaumont or you know anyone there, pass it on!
For those of you who have not yet heard the terrible news, our very good friend and loved one
Julie de Rossi was in a car accident last wednesday and passed away a few hours later. We are much the worse for her loss, and we will always remember her by her laughter.
For information on her memorial, please
contact us.
Hello all, Nino here to give the minutes on our weekend:
A great time this weekend kids! Two great shows, two great cities, three tired as hell musicians and a few hundred miles. For starters: Ian, as you may know, has been at the
SXSW event since last Wednesday, doing whatever it is he does, and having a blast of a time talking all things music with countless industry peers all over the city of Austin. I'm happy to report that Ian met nary a bad personality, and made infinite new friends.
The three of us spent most of the Saturday evening at
The Vibe, enjoying the sounds of
the duo, Mofro, and others (all part of the
Jambase showcase). For a poignant description of the duo's jaw dropping set, do ask Ian. He'd be honored. (Ian also saw our new friends
Jacob Fred Jazz Oddyssey play the night before, too, and I'm sure he'd expound on that too if asked.)
Our own set began at midnight at the
Elephant Room. What a time! Blasted the place with a punchy set complete with my new
pedal antics. Well, some anyway. Playing SXSW was truly an honor and a privilege, and we hope to make a return to that most legendary of Texas music festivals sometime soon.
Sunday night at
Super Happy Fun Land found us playing the South By Due East festival, doing a 100% improv set. Before we got our game on, we were amazed by the sounds of Muzak John and his glorious Casio keyboards and stompboxes. Kneeling on the floor in a wizard hat, he was regaling us with the most intoxicating blend of music/noise/experimental stuff. A more than fitting prelude to our own alternative set, we were most excited to have experienced his work! Our set was totally fun, and the wonderful folks at SHFL seemed to really enjoy it. (I will admit, however, that the set wasn't 100% improv - we finished the night with our staple, "Abbey Rhodes". Everything else was spontaneous, though.) The set was an explosion of sound, all of which hit us right on target. Never cease to amaze me, Nuje and Ian when that happens ... ha!
A fine weekend, all in all. Catch up with you all soon. Peace/love, NINO
Hi all - Ian here, I'm over in Austin at the SxSW conference. There's some amazing music going on over here - saw
The Slip and
Gnappy last night, and
Particle the night before (plus many many more). Off to see
Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey tonight.
For all you Houston folks, don't forget to head over to Brasil for Funk Jazz Fridays - DJ Soul Bandit will be spinning some serious funk & soul tracks from his collection. Not to be missed. And make plans to come out to
Super Happy Fun Land on Sunday (4pm is our start time, we're told) for South By Due East.
Just added some new show dates for
Funk Jazz Fridays. This week we'll be having WAXPLOITATION!s DJ Soul Bandit, the host of
KTRU's excellent Vintage Vinyl Funk & Soul Show. He will be spinning some of the most seriously heavy funk grooves ever recorded, from his private collection. Should be most excellent. Other adds for April include
Gnappy and
Righteous Buddha. Get the word out -
Funk Jazz Fridays is the best funk & jazz music coming through Houston, every week at Brasil (2604 Dunlavy). And it's FREE.
For those of you hanging here in Houston this week, there is a MUST SEE show this
Thursday night at
Rhythm Room. It's the
Marco Benevento & Joe Russo duo (also know as "The Dynamic Duo"). They're playing with Hairy Apex BMX and Mofro. These guys really have to be seen to be believed. If you're into jazz & funk playing at all, you'll want to catch this show - these guys are the real deal, and they're some of the most talented musicians out there today. GO GO GO if you can.
Damn, if you missed
Friends Of Gravity last night, you should be kicking yourself right now. They were totally amazing.
Citizen Doug was out, and he can vouche for the monster that Simon Lott was on drums. Roy from
Shake Kabibo was there with his crew, in awe with the rest of us of Tommy Sciple's chops (and his axe - a beautiful custom 6 string bass). Louis Weyrich (of The Myth) was there and marvelled with me at the unbelieveable musicality of Andy Bourgeois's organ playing. These guys are so tight and energetic, every head in the room was bobbing and there were cheers after every tune. They'll be back again in April (at
Rhythm Room) and May (at
Last Concert Cafe) so make sure you check them out next time they're here.
Tonight for
Funk Jazz Fridays, come to Brasil to check out an incredible band from Baton Rouge,
Friends Of Gravity. They'll be starting around 10pm, and as always the show is FREE.
Ian got the opportunity to jam with the guys from Austin's
Groovin Ground last night at Tambaleo, for their weekly event
The Portal. The result? An incredible 3 hours of free-form, open-ended music with some of Austin's most talented jam & jazz band players. Among the lineup were
GG members Evan and Dustin Bozarth and Nick Chambers, Kyle Clayton from
Last Free Exit, Matt Williams from
Apostrophe, and many others.
Peeking around at who else will be at
SxSW this year. Quite a few Houston notables on the bill:
- The
Linus Pauling Quartet (thanks for the
shout out, guys)
-
The Fatal Flying Guilloteens
-
Killers For Hire
-
Hilary Sloan & co.
-
Chango Jackson
-
The Studemont Project
-
D.R.U.M.
-
The Neutral Sisters
And a few more Houston acts we don't know personally. Some other favorites of ours (outside of Houston) who will be showcasing include
Gnappy,
Jacob Fred Jazz Oddyssey, and a whole
Jambase showcase.
There's also quite an extensive schedule of Houston bands in the
TexasJam.com Houston Showcase, in combination with
Outbound Music. The full schedule for those showcases isn't out yet, but we'll let you know when it arrives.
Big thanks to all who came out for
Funk Jazz Fridays this week. We had a great time and enjoyed seeing you all there.
It's a quiet week in Drop Trio land, as Mike drives his family cross country for a Washington DC vacation. Nino and I are using the time off to get business in order around here (it's awful hard to get anything done with Nuje around ...). First up are a couple web site touch ups. You've seen the comments on the blog (a new feature). Today we've got a new look for the whole music section -
take a look and let us know what you think! More to come this week ...
Outbound Music has finished their site re-design, and it looks really slick! Go on over and
check out our page. And if you still don't have
Big Dipper, well, now's the perfect time to buy a copy.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Outbound Music, it's a web site owned and operated out of Houston, TX, by Al & Courtney Delaney, two of the coolest folks in the Houston music scene, period. They stock music by tons of local Houston artists, including
Tru Sol,
Free Radicals,
Cindy Scott,
Thomas Helton,
Collective Hallucination,
Hayes Carll,
John Evans,
Steve Steele,
Shannon Cutts, and many more. If you're a local Houston band,
contact Al & Courtney and put your music up on Outbound Music!
We're at Brasil tonight, for
Funk Jazz Fridays - come on over and say hello!
After careful consideration, we've decided to try adding a comment feature to this page. At the bottom of every post, there's now a link that says "Leave a Comment". So if you want to give a shout out, ask a question, get a clarification, etc, that's the place. Come on by and say hello ...
Exciting news today! Drop Trio will be performing in an official artist showcase at this year's
South By Southwest Music Conference! Check out
our page on the SxSW site.
Sometimes, you just have to close your eyes and make the
leap.
So last Sunday, Feb. 29th, Drop Trio hit
Sugarhill studios with a new idea. It was a whim, really. Completly improvised, no plan, no safety net. A leap of faith.
And the session couldn't have gone better. With the help of engineer
John Griffin and resident drum guru
Robbie Parish, we got an amazing sound and put down over 2 hours of material that's totally new territory for us - some avant-gard, some progressive, some ambient, etc. - and of course, plenty of plain old rockin' out Drop Trio style.
Leap.
Pictures from the session will be up soon.
Leap will probably be released sometime in 2004.
