Our good friends the
Southern Backtones will be on
90.1 KPFT this afternoon at 3pm. They'll be playing songs from their
latest release live in the studio. John Griffin plays rhythm guitar for the Backtones. John is also a rad studio engineer who we had the pleasure of working with on "Big Dipper" and "Leap." We'll give a quarter to the first person who can answer this correctly: Who's the guy on the
right?
Tonight, Ian joins the
Free Radicals for some post Thanksgiving improv at
funk jazz fridays. Come and drink some wine, to work off all those calories you ate yesterday. At last count, there's gonna be turntables, sax, trumpet, drums, keys ... and we'll see what else ...
Hope you all have a wonderful thanksgiving. We're thankful for having friends and fans like you!
Drop Trio has just been featured in HoustonBands.net.
Go take a look. Thanks guys!
For those of you unfamiliar with

So, last night's
Electronic Improv Games show was pretty cool. Ian participated, along with about a dozen other electronic musicians (including his fellow
KTRU DJs
Chuck Roast and
Maria Chavez). Here's a short excerpt from one of the performances:
- Segment 1 (Excerpt) - 3:14, 3.8 MB
This clip is from the first segment, while Ian was playing (that's him on the pulsing sound, which is coming from the
Prophet 600). Other musicians heard here are Maria Chavez (on scratchy jumpy turntables), Pizo Meyer from
Phoenelai (on soft drones), and
Kevin Novak of T.E.F. (on thunderous sounding stuff). Towards the end of this clip, the game shifted it to be Kevin's turn, and halfway through, something briefly killed his power and reset all of his equipment. Kind of a bummer, except that it sounded really cool. :) Anyway, if you like stuff like this, there's probably a lot more of it in Houston than you realize ...
Last night was a super cool show at
Brasil. We played loud and long, and had a great crowd. We even had a surprise guest sit-in by
LRJ, doin' his tune "The Ole Hood" (aka "Slapjack"). Hooray for Brasil.
Tonight (Saturday, Nov 20), if you happen to be around, come by the
Barnevelder Movement Arts Complex and you can hear Ian participating in a performance called
Electronic Improv Games - it'll be a bunch of local electronic musicians participating in unrehearsed, improvised "games". Should be interesting!
You know the drill - tonight,
Brasil, 10pm - 1am. Free stickers to the first 50 people who tell us we totally don't need a singer at all.
Oh, and there's a new track in the
DT Live Archive today - "Shelby Gets A Haircut". And we'll give a free
CD to the first person who knows where we came up with that name (just the "Shelby" part).
We had a total blast last night at the
Meridian. It was nice to play a slightly bigger club show, where you have things like, say, a sound check, and a dressing room. Will wonders never cease? Anyway, we played a rock out set (distortion knob on 10, thank you very much) and then settled in to see Mofro rock the house. They're great guys (Ian especially enjoyed meeting their organ / bass player
Adam Scone, also of the
Sugarman Three). All around good show. Thanks to Pace for having us!
(Sorry this entry was posted late - got saved as a draft but never published!)
Tonight is our first time playing at the
Meridian, 1503 Chartres. The show's being put on by PACE Concerts, and we're really excited about opening for
Mofro. And believe me, we will indeed rock out. Please come and show PACE that we can draw a crowd, and maybe they'll have us back for more!
BTW - new file in the
DT Live Archive today - a special 17 minute epic version of Melody-Melody from Beaumont, TX.
Go check it out!
Today marks the release of the 2nd hip hop collaboration for Drop Trio - Houston rapper LRJ is releasing his new album
The Hang Over, with a track called "The Ole Hood" that features Drop Trio's tune "Slapjack" (from Big Dipper) as the backing track. From LRJ's record label, Cinque:
It's here! The new LRJ-The Hang Over album. 17 hot tracks with many special guest features that include: E-Rock(5th Ward Boyz), Ace Deuce, Drop Trio, The Top Grindin' Family, The Southern Gladiators, and more! Go pick up your copy today!
You can
listen to a sound clip online ... and if you want to hear the whole thing, tune in tonight at midnight to Damage Control Radio on
KPFT 90.1 and request the tune.
If you haven't had a chance to pick up
Leap yet, and you're in the Montrose area today, come by the
Borders Books & Music at Kirby & West Alabama - Drop Trio will be playing a live in-store performance from 4-6pm. Hope to see you there!
Swing yoself over to Brasil this evening for the every-friday ritual:
Funk Jazz Fridays. Tonight, you've got the majestic
PLUMP, Houston's finest funk jammin', round-the-world playin', bra catchin', blazer wearin' band. Seriously, these guys are bad ass, so come by and witness it.
We're introducing a new feature on our web site today - the
Drop Trio Live Archive! It's a single source for all of our publicly available live recordings, both single tracks and entire shows. You can get to it from the
Music page, or by linking to it
directly. We'll be adding a new track on there every week from now on. This week's recording is from our 10/30 show at
Continental Club with the
Southern Backtones:
